Poitier's was born during his parent's visit to Miami. He's actually a native of The Bahamas.
Poitier grew up in poverty with little education. At 15, Poitier moved to the US and worked in a number of jobs and spent a short time in the Army.
On a whim, Poitier attended an audition for the American Negro Theatre. Rejected by the theater company, Poitier dedicated himself to overcoming his accent and improving his acting. After his second audition, he was accepted.
Poitier began appearing on Broadway and. in 1950, appeared in the film No Way Out.
