Sinead O'Connor

Sinead Marie-Bernadette O'Connor was born on December 8, 1966, in Dublin, Ireland.

O'Connor began performing in local coffeehouses and studied voice and piano at the Dublin College of Music. In the mid-1980s she moved to London, England where she recorded her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra in 1987.

Her 1990 album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got spawned the hit "Nothing Compares 2 U." O'Conner refused to accept the four Grammy nominations she received for the album.

On October 3, 1992, O'Connor appeared on "Saturday Night Live" to promote her new album, Am I Not Your Girl?. She performed the Bob Marley song "War." As the song ended, she said "Fight the real enemy!" She help up a photograph of Pope John Paul II which she ripped into pieces.

O'Conner recorded Harry Nilsson's "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City" for the soundtrack of the film You've Got Mail. Originally, the song was intended to be used in the film, but at the last minute it was replaced by Nilsson's original version. O'Conner's version still appears on the soundtrack CD.
