| In 1956, Lonnie Donegan (with the Chris Barber Jazz Band) had a hit in the UK with a "skiffle" version of "Rock Island Line." Skiffle, a folksy style of music using instruments fashioned out of ordinary household implements, caught the imagination of teenagers in Britan who picked up washboards, guitars, and tea-chest basses and formed skiffle groups.
Among the many skiffle groups was the Quarrymen featuring a guitarist and singer named John Lennon. The Quarrymen eventually evolved into the Beatles. Visitor Comments: |
