Stanford University
"Leland Stanford Junior University" opened on October 1, 1891, in Palo Alto, California. Stanford University was founded by Leland Stanford, a former governor of California and U.S. Senator, and his wife, Jane. The university was established in memory of their only son, who died at age 15.
