| Swoosie Kurtz was born on September 6, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska. Her father was a World War II pilot. Swoosie was named after his airplane, "Swoose," itself named for a line from a Kay Kyser song ("Half swan, half goose, Alexander is a swoose").
Kurtz majored in drama at the University of Southern California then attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She won a Tony, a Drama Desk, and an Outer Critics Circle award for her performance in Lanford Wilson's "The Fifth of July" in 1981.
