Swoosie Kurtz was born on September 6, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska. Her father was a World War II pilot. Swoosie was named after his airplane, "Swoose," itself named for a line from a Kay Kyser song ("Half swan, half goose, Alexander is a swoose").

Kurtz majored in drama at the University of Southern California then attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She won a Tony, a Drama Desk, and an Outer Critics Circle award for her performance in Lanford Wilson's "The Fifth of July" in 1981.

Kurtz's film roles include parts in Oliver's Story, The World According to Garp, Bright Lights, Big City, and True Stories. On TV she starred in "Love, Sidney" and "Sisters."
