Cruise spent a year at a Franciscan monastery before deciding to persue a career in acting. He made his first film, Endless Love, in 1981 and by 1983 was considered a star.
Cruise received a "Best Actor" Oscar nomination for his portrayal of paralyzed Vietnam vet in Born on the Fourth of July in 1989.
