| Tom Petty was born on October 20, 1950, in Gainesville, Florida.
Petty played in bands in is hometown of Gainesville, Florida, then, in the early 1970s, he moved to Los Angeles, California.
Petty's band, the Heartbreakers, was signed to Leon Russell's Shelter Records label in 1975. Their debut album, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was released in 1976. Though it earned immediate critical acclaim, the album took more than a year to chart.
The group's 1979 album Damn The Torpedoes produced two top-20 hits, "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee."
Although he continued to record with the Heartbreakers, Petty's bestselling album is a solo effort, Full Moon Fever.
