| Tony Garnett was born in 1935 in Birmingham, England, and studied psychology at London University. At the university, he began acting and after graduation he worked for a while as an actor including appearances in BBC television productions.
Then Garnett gave up acting to become an assistant to Roger Smith, a script editor at the BBC. Garnett later became a producer at the BBC and directed the film Prostitute.
Feeling "artistically and politically out of place in Britain" Garnett took up an offer from Universal in America. He wrote and directed Handgun. Harry Nilsson recorded "Lay Down Your Arms" for the film. It plays during the closing credits. Universal thought Handgun was uncommercial and deferred its release.
