July 11, 2005 An article about the advertising campaign for Coca-Cola with Lime discusses the use of Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" in TV ads for the soft drink.
To let consumers know that Coke is no longer a one-cola player, the beverage giant tapped into a 1971 hit song, "Coconut", by singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson and put a slight twist on the lyrics for the island-inspired song.
The lyrics in the original song are: "You put the lime in the coconut, you drink them both together." The words for the Coke ad became: "You put the lime in the Coke, you nut."
The TVs "hit the mark with consumers overall and particularly with the 18-to-24 age group, according to results of Ad Track, USA TODAY's weekly survey." Among 18 to 24-year-olds, "30% like the ad 'a lot,' and 32% consider the ad 'very effective.'"
The article concludes by noting that "oddly, the ad is appealing to youths, who were not even born when the song was released." And David Preston, a 35-year-old senior brand manager at Coca-Cola, is quoted as saying "I hadn't heard the song before."
