San Diego Union-Tribune United States May 6, 2004 Daniel J. Chacón writes about the city of Escondido, California's 15-year battle with the city's "trash king," John Henry McCann. The city's efforts to get McCann to rid his yard of "old tires, dead weeds, rusty bedsprings, broken appliances, wooden pallets, plastic chairs," and other junk have been "complicated by drawn-out court cases, questions about McCann's mental competency and possession of weapons, and relatives who apparently don't want anything to do with him."
"McCann," Chacón writes, "could not be reached for comment. But in a November 1999 interview, he said some of the items represented his 'thoughts.' 'I do what I do,' he said, quoting a 1971 Harry Nilsson song: 'Put the lime in the coconut and shake it all up.'"
