Ringo's drumming can't be over appreciated. He adds an extra tom hit that may not be noticeable on first listen, but once noticed, is exactly what the song needs. Harry's singing, like the orchestration, builds in intensity as the song progresses. By the last verse, he sounds positively distraught. Also, his singing in the middle eight and fadeout are perfect for the song. The "primal scream" ending rivals Lennon's "Momma don't go/Daddy come home" screams. I am partial to symphonic arrangements in rock songs, and this is one of the best, if not the best ever!
Typically symphonics are used to augment an arrangement, but in this song it plays the lead role. It builds and builds and never lets up. There are so many intriguing sounds you could listen for a lifetime and not catch them all. Highights for me are the drumming (awesome), some fading in and out of electric guitars late in the piece (I think), of course Harry's singing and screaming, and the multitude of symphonic themes, clinks, and clanks :) |
