July 22, 2004 Journalist Erik Himmelsbach spoke with filmmaker Fred Wolf about The Point! which Wolf produced and directed as a 90-minute "movie of the week" for ABC in 1971.
"Nilsson historian" Curtis Armstrong is quoted in the article describing Harry Nilsson's LSD-provoked inspiration for the animated feature: "What he observed was that the trees all had points, the branches all had points, the leaves all had points."
Fred Wolf is described as "an up and comer in the animation world" who took on the challange of producing the film with a limited budget and little time: "I agreed to do this, and the budget was incredibly low. I had to complete this in 34 weeks and [...] it's a long tedious process, hand-drawn animation. Worse than that, fool that I was, I decided to animate the whole thing by myself. I damn near made the Guinness Book of Records."
Wolf recalls that executives at ABC were not thrilled with the songs Nilsson wrote for The Point!. He paraphrases their response, "You mean Fred is working his ass off out there, and Harry comes up with "Me And My Arrow"? Where are the big songs?" Of course, "Me And My Arrow" went on to become one of Nilsson's biggest hits.
